Near midnight

At the back of the stables, Winnie and Stella rolled Walker to the middle of the nightsoil wagon tray while Effie kept watch for the return of the nightmen.

Winnie, reeling at the stench, repositioned the barrels, redistributed the straw, and double-checked that he was hidden.

‘Ooh! Don’t forget his hat.’ Stella threw the bowler on to the heap.

‘They’re coming!’ Effie whispered.

The three ladies scurried into the shadows between the shed and the stable.

A waft of fresh filth filled the air as the two nightmen edged their sloshing barrel of swill on to the tray. Joking and laughing, the pair completed their noxious task without so much as a splutter of complaint.

A moment later the wagon rolled away, leaving a swirl of putrid gases in its wake.

The girls stepped out of the shadows, faces dirtied, dresses torn.

‘That was the vilest experience of my life.’ Stella held out her hands as if she couldn’t move them far enough from her body. ‘Look, my gloves are ruined.’

Effie yanked her filthy gloves off. ‘Thank goodness we had gloves! That was revolting.’

Winnie watched the wagon disappear down the side alley, pitying both the nightmen and their poor old mare. She turned to her accomplices in crime. ‘I cannot thank you enough for coming to my aid.’

Stella smiled at Winnie. ‘It would be inexcusable to allow that vile man to drag off our clever quartermistress.’

‘Indeed.’ Effie entwined her filthy arm with Winnie’s and led her back towards the grand house. ‘After all, you haven’t yet delivered our customized chatelaines and armoured unmentionables.’
